The Calhoun Community College Athletics Division is excited to announce women’s volleyball tryouts on Friday, March 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Kelley Gymnasium on the college’s Decatur campus.
According to Jamiee Moran, Calhoun’s head volleyball coach, there is a $25 fee to tryout, and participants must be a high school senior who is planning to graduate in the spring of 2023, or a college transfer who can provide an athletics release or waiver. A current printed physical must also be provided as no digital copies will be accepted.
“If I could provide any insight to tryouts, I would encourage all who are interested in trying out to bring their “A-game”. This sport is very competitive, so be sure to give it all you have when you come out,” commented Moran. “We are in need of middle hitters, but don’t let that deter you from coming as other positions are needed as well. Aside from being a strong athlete, we want young ladies who have positive attitudes and strong leadership skills as well,” said Moran.
This year, Moran will also host the colleges first-ever Adult 6’s Co-Ed Fundraising Tournament, which is being sponsored by The Croom Foundation. That event will be held the day after tryouts on Saturday, March 18 beginning at 8:00 a.m. in the college’s Kelley Gymnasium.
The tournament is open to any individual who is 18 years of age and older. Each team must have a maximum of 8 players and pay the $125 fee to participate. All proceeds from the fundraising tournament will benefit the college’s volleyball team and will help with their traveling expenses, tournament expenses, free community camps they plan to host for the public, as well as new equipment. Team space is limited and will be accepted to play in the tournament on a first-come-first-serve basis.
“I hope this tournament will become an annual event where volleyball enthusiasts from around the community will have an opportunity to keep their skills fresh, while having some fun, and helping us to enrich the collegiate experience for our volleyball athletes through their financial support,” says Moran. “The goal is to build life-long community support for Calhoun’s new volleyball program, and to help spread awareness about the many great things we are doing here at the College within our athletics division,” she added.
