Want to make a difference? Answer the call today at Huntsville Fire & Rescue

31

For many, fighting fires is a childhood dream, but these critical first responders do much more than run into burning buildings.

They also respond to events such as tornados, floods, manmade disasters and technical rescues. They protect our public and environment during hazardous materials incidents and render lifesaving medical aid to citizens in need. They also improve our community’s quality of life through training, education and other nonemergency services.

As pillars of Huntsville’s public safety infrastructure, Huntsville Fire & Rescue (HFR) Chief Howard “Mac” McFarlen said firefighters are the backbone of our community.

“Our staff at Huntsville Fire & Rescue are here for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year,” he said. “These dedicated first responders provide rapid, reliable emergency services to our citizens. If you feel a calling to give back to your community or make a career change, now’s the time to consider giving Huntsville Fire & Rescue a chance.”

The application period for the next class of firefighter recruits runs Friday, May 20, through Thursday, June 30. Anyone interested in being part of the team can visit JoinHFR.com to learn more about the hiring process and complete an application.

To apply, prospective candidates must be at least 18 years old, have no felony convictions and possess a high school diploma or GED. Benefits include competitive pay, a flexible work schedule, advancement opportunities, retirement, and health and other insurance.

An 11-year HFR employee, Cory Green is a driver-engineer and recruiter for the department. He said firefighting is a time-honored career steeped in tradition and built around a sense of comradery.

“Firefighters risk it all to save lives and property and to serve their community,” Green said. “If you have the ability to reason and communicate effectively, maintain awareness while multitasking, remain calm, manage stress and, most importantly, function as a team member, we’d love to talk to you about joining Huntsville Fire & Rescue.”

The City of Huntsville, an Equal Opportunity Employer, is taking a grassroots approach to finding diverse candidates. Throughout the six-week hiring campaign, HFR will offer multiple meet-and-greet events, social media content, digital and radio advertising and blogs. Green will also meet with job seekers during local sporting events, career fairs, colleges, trade schools and more.

Still on the fence about whether you should apply?

“If you’re not sure if firefighting is right for you or have questions about the process, we encourage candidates to fill out an interest card on our website, JoinHFR.com,” Green said. “We do our best to respond to each person as quickly as possible so you can make an informed choice for your future.”
