The Calhoun Community College Athletics Division is excited to announce free admission to all Warhawk basketball fans during its 2022-2023 season. The decision was made following the college’s decision to bring basketball back after nearly 21 years.

“Our goal is to rebuild the fan base of our athletics programs,” commented Dr. Jimmy Hodges, Calhoun President. “We felt the best way to do that is to offer free admission for the community to come out and support the new Warhawk basketball teams and fall in love with Calhoun sports again,” added Hodges.

The College’s first game will be held tomorrow, November 1 against Motlow State Community College. The women’s team will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s team following at 7:30 p.m. A short welcome will be held prior to the first tip-off along with a half-time show recognizing former players and coaches.

“It feels good to be a part of such a historic moment for women’s basketball at Calhoun,” commented Candace Byrd, Calhoun Women’s Basketball Head Coach. “As a Tanner, AL native, Calhoun was an institution I grew up respecting, and now having the privilege to rebuild and lead a team with my fellow coaches after 21 years is a bit surreal,” added Byrd.

The free admission waiver applies only to the team’s regular season games and tournaments that are held on Calhoun’s campus and does not apply to away games or those held by any other athletic association the college is affiliated with.

“Rebuilding. Rebranding. Reforming. Community Service. These are all things I’ve been doing with my guys on and off the court,” commented Derrick Powell, Calhoun’s Men’s Basketball Head Coach. “The game is more than just athleticism, it includes being a good student who represents the college well, a great member of the community, and of course a ball player who wants to get better each and every day. That is what I feel I have built with this new team, and we are beyond excited to take on Motlow tomorrow for our first official game,” added Powell.

Calhoun looks forward to former, current, and new fans packing out its updated gymnasium. To follow the teams and learn about their players and schedule, visit www.calhoun.edu/athletics.
